Guns, Furious

Gabby Giffords is furious, and so am I.

Liz Gumbinner, a/k/a Mom-101, is furious too, and has a list of things you can do.

Me, I used the list of twitter handles that the Huffington Post helpfully published, and sent a tweet to every single senator on that list - even though none of them represent me. Pissing in the wind, I'm sure, but at least I felt like I'd done something.

Remember Network? Even if you never saw the movie, you've probably heard the quote:
I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"

So, whatcha gonna do?

  1. Created a twitter account just to tweet those senators.

  2. I highly recommend that you tweet those senators AGAIN next time (and yes, there will be a next time) someone goes on a shooting spree.

    Well done.

again, what in that bill would have stopped any of the recent shootings?
    NOTHING
and how many otherwise defenseless women have been able to defend themselves with a gun? PLENTY
my mom is a certified NRA instructor. She teaches women how to properly shoot pistols. Of course that is in another state because most of us in NY could not get a permit.
How about enforcing the law. NOT ONE PERSON WHO HAS FAILED CURRENT BACKGROUND has been prosecuted and I think it is a felony.
We could take illegal guns away in Chicago---but it is not happening. Why?

  4. Keep on being Canadian and hope that your legislators notice, sometime, that gun control is in effect up here.
Not that we don't have shooters, but I think we have fewer incidents than you do in the States.

  5. I don't know... I need a resource to help me understand the other side of this because I don't get it at all.

    Freakonomics on Gun Control

    Statistics…

at least one gun for every adult in America
11,000 gun murders in America per year
20,000 gun suicides in America per year
Since 1982, 62 mass shootings (513 people killed total) (excludes gang shootings & armed robberies. Increasing each year. 2012 7 shootings and 4 times the average number of victims that year.
Non mass-murder homicides went way down 15 years ago from before that, though.
The number of people killed in mass shootings is a small percentage of gun violence.
Any particular hand gun in the US kills someone once every 10,000 yea
Swimming pools are 100 times more likely to lead to the death of a child than a household with a gun.

    What won’t work…

Only addressing new gun purchases. Guns are a durable good work for 50 – 100 years.
Gun buyback programs. Only those who wouldn’t be using the guns anyways are the ones who bring back their guns.

    What might work…

Law that says that if you commit a crime and you have a gun with you, we’ll add 5, 10, 15, 20 years to the sentence you’d get otherwise. This has worked in California in the past. (This means you’re not tying a penalty to the gun itself but to the use of the guns for a purpose we don’t like).
Institutionalizing the mentally ill. But that’s incredibly costly and morally suspect.
