First off, a letter from a teacher (a/k/a The Book Whisperer) about why kids should read at home, and why she doesn't require book logs.
Lots of people have lots to say about reading logs.
Is it possible to motivate students? "Let the students decide except when there’s a good reason why we have to decide for them."
She "called bacon on it".
It's not just about the education; it's good for families.
And, finally:
If you read nothing else, read the last one AND all of the comments, which range from "babies are tasty" to "gross" to "all animals eat the placenta" to "it's the best thing ever" to ... oh, just go read them yourself.
I was really stressed out about that last article right up until I read that they were pills. I was imagining something much grosser.
ReplyDeleteI think the best of this group is the one in the preschools. I'm not sure I understand the one about the pigs. I don't know what I would do if my children were not avid readers, so I can't comment to the reading log issue, although it does seem kind of like the instrument practice log they're required to complete. I have learned that with the instrument mire practice equals more proficiency. I had read the placenta article previously, and it just makes me glad that's all behind me. I do think it was the herbs that were the problem though.
ReplyDeleteMire? Mere? More!
DeleteI like the "how to create nonreaders" article but I disagree with it. If you want to make my child hate reading, force him to discuss *any* aspect of it with his peers. If you want him to hate school entirely, require him to attend meetings...
ReplyDeleteOne problem with schools is that they only allow verbal & written communication. Children can't communicate physically; after 2nd grade they don't draw; they don't sculpt or make movies or sing or play music or any of that: it's all writing talking writing talking.
For ME that's great, but it's a real challenge for one of my children.
Eh. I don't expect the school to make my child a reader. We read to our children growing up and we read around them all the time so they are readers, too. They consider schoolwork (reading logs or whatever) part of their "job." We all have jobs. Sometimes they love the work and/or the teacher, sometimes they hate it. Such is life.
ReplyDeletePigs are different. Like dogs. Except we don't eat dogs. Why not? Probably b/c you can't make dog bacon. I do not know how we are going to pull the trigger on our pig. But we do love that bacon...
About the placenta...where does Motherlode get these people??!!! I always feel like Motherlode is Jerry Springer on paper, ya know?

I hate book logs and I don't make my kids do them.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the placenta thing even if it was dried I gag at the though of consuming human meat.
just gah
ReplyDeleteI know several people who are way more into the motherhood thing than I am (also composting, CFLs, car-pooling and riding their bikes) who ate their placentas.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they're doing the work so I can sit back with my Soft White GE light and eat potato chips made on the site of a former toxic waste dump.
Also, I am totally stealing your idea for a link dump.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
That last has been amusing me for days now.
