Do things disappear in your house? We used to have a pair of blue-handled scissors living in a kitchen drawer, for snipping chives and opening UPS boxes - until one day they disappeared. We're sure the child took them and lost them; tape and scissors are always vanishing under her watch. I once found a pair of scissors under her bed, along with some locks of hair. Her hair. That she'd been cutting herself. Under her bed. Anyway, periodically we ask her, whenever anything is missing, where are the blue-handled scissors? Those scissors will never be forgotten.
Sometime last summer, her iPod went to the land of the lost. It was one of those tiny Shuffles, tiny, and therefore easily misplaced. Now the refrain is
where are the blue-handled scissors and the iPod?
or,
where are your library books and the blue-handled scissors and the iPod?
or
where are your library books and (insert missing object) and the blue-handled scissors and the iPod?
The other day, it turned into summer and so I broke out a pair of shorts that I hadn't worn since last summer (or fall or whenever it was hot). I dropped my phone into one of the cargo pockets. (I love cargo pockets; I love not having to carry anything.) We went to some friends' house for dinner. At some point, I fished my phone out of the pocket, I know not why. To my surprise, there was a soft pillow-like object in the pocket. A small grey nylon padded case containing ... the iPod and its headphones.
Bad mommy.
It had certainly gone through the wash, but seems none-the-worse for that and a year in a pocket.
But the blue-handled scissors are still missing.
We have a pair of blue-handled scissors too! Actually two of them! One better than the other and they disappear on a regular basis until my husband hides them away from the children. This is such a regular thing that we've been known to just yell SCISSORS when we need them. My oldest is the worst about not putting things back.
ReplyDeleteBusted! lol!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteYeah. I often put things like scissors in my back pockets because they are the biggest, so I don't really want a surprise discovery.
ReplyDeleteI lost two brand-new rolls of wrapping paper. It took my 13-year-old to find them (in my closet, where I myself had put them). Gah!
ReplyDeletei like finding money in the pockets...the more the better!
ReplyDeleteThings go missing in this house all the time, and it drives me INSANE. Socks, shoes, phones (we have a set of 5 cordless landlines and currently can find 2) - you name it, it is either missing now or was missing recently.
ReplyDeleteMy pink-handled sewing scissors are sacred - no one is permitted even to touch them but me. They are the only scissors that aren't sticky, knicked, dull, and/or missing.
ReplyDeleteWe blame bad house faeries - things go missing, then reappear where we just looked. Bad faeries!! They especially like my crochet hooks and the baby's pacifiers, which turn up in the oddest places. Hrmph.
Shade and Sweetwater,
K
when my daughter moved to college, we found about 6 pairs of scissors, at least as many rolls of tape, etc. her room was like the black hole of missing useful objects.
ReplyDeleteI think you should contact Apple for an ad about the freshly laundered but still working ipod.
ReplyDeleteAll.the.time. Now the missing object phenom has spread to my closet and drawers. AKA, teenage girls looking to supplement their wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to checking summer clothing pockets for lost items from the year before. Money, especially. Glad you found the iPod!
ReplyDeleteMy record is the car keys - in spring and fall jacket pocket. Lost, oh maybe April. Found - October. Glad to know that Ipods wash well.
ReplyDeleteSympathy.
At my parents' house it's my dad's green sports shirt that disappeared circa 1960 something. The running joke when my mom says "Guess what I found?" is to answer "Dad's green sport shirt"
ReplyDeleteOf course they've moved twice since it disappeared :D
Oh my. Did she go medieval on your ass? If that had been me with my daughter's ipod...I shudder to think. I just went to do some gardening and can't find my blue-handled plant snipper thingies, but not much mystery about that - I'm not the best at putting stuff back in the shed and my husband's even worse. Once my mother put a leftover lobster tail in her coat pocket at the restaurant and forgot to take it out when we got home. It wasn't pretty.
ReplyDeleteToo funny. It's umbrellas and keys for me. Which is why I've made 20 (no joke) sets of house keys and have enough umbrellas to outset half of London.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost enough.
Somehow, I can hang on to the ones for the car. : )
