An Afternoon on An Island

Pro: It is salt water.
Con: It's not the ocean.

Pro: It's pretty close to home.
Con: The sand is coarse and rocky.

Pro: You get to take a tiny little ferry to get there!
Con: Beach pass, plus ferry ticket, plus parking adds up.

Pro: It's an island! The child can't get lost.

Over all, and even though it's not the ocean, we had a great afternoon at Island Beach - a tiny little public island park in Long Island Sound off Greenwich, Connecticut. It's totally charming, the girl loved building moats and sand castles with similarly sized strangers, and I'd go back in a minute. Hat tip to my next door neighbors; I'd never heard of it until two days ago.

  1. We used to have passes to use Westchester County pools and beaches thanks to a great-aunt. I have fond memories of many a trip to Glen Island on Long Island Sound--especially the part where we got to go over the drawbridge.
That was in pre-AC days and sometimes on hot weather we would spend the evening there, complete with a picnic supper.

  2. Oh, I used to sail there when I was a kid. What a lovely place. I'd forgotten all about it.

  3. It sounds wonderful! I love taking ferries.

Clearly, I need to make a plan to get my family to a beach this summer. (And maybe also a ferris wheel.)

  4. Very cool! The whole experience! But curious minds want to know... did you see Gilligan?

  6. I like the island: can't get lost thing, although I much prefer NO salt water. Less gagging.

  7. I love ferries. That would be worth it in itself.

  9. Nothing more fun than our Long Island Sound Islands...well, except for, maybe, the Caribbean ones in January....

  10. Oh, Island Beach is great. Sunshine and I went a week and a half ago. Love the ferry ride, looking at the Belle Harbor houses. My only complain is that the snack bar only has diet pepsi, no diet coke.

  11. I wish I could play at such a place.

Oh, but wait. No Diet Coke?

    Pass.
