A Synchronicity of Books

Every single book that the adults got for Christmas was food related non-fiction.

  1. Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession
  2. Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-time Eater
  3. Appetite City: A Culinary History of New York
  4. Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human
  5. Far Flung and Well Fed: The Food Writing of R.W. Apple, Jr.
  6. The Opera Lover's Cookbook: Menus for Elegant Entertaining

I think they have us pegged.

  2. yum. I am also excited about this year's book present -- "Indian Home Cooking" by Suvir Saran and Stephanie Lyness.

and you must let us know how "Catching Fire" is. sounds like a book this Biology teacher who loves to cook would enjoy.

  4. An amusing pile! I'm intrigued by the opera lover's book. I've only read #1; and I'd be interested in your commentary when you get to it.

p.s. I got Nigel Slater's latest from my husband.

  6. All non-fiction food books, but no actual cook books? Or humor food books? Wow. Your reputation must be pretty powerful!

  7. I would love to read each and every one of those! Did you get a week off to go along with all that reading material? ;) Happy New Year!

  9. Please tell me how you like Cleaving. I was ruminating on this book a couple weeks ago. Opted for a different title. Want to know if I should give it a second gander.

  10. My in-laws gave me Ayelet Waldman's Bad Mother, and gave Chris Fatherhood for Amateurs by Michael Chabon. I like the idea of a couple getting books written by a couple, but I think I might have preferred the Chabon book.

In the food non-fiction genre, you might like the book I got for my brother-in-law: Jonathan Gold's book Counter Intelligence. Although nominally about where to eat in LA, it is a culinary tour of various ethnic food. Plus, his writing is good.

  13. Love the title Cleaving. Over Christmas Jeff's great-aunt (about 90 years old) was talking dreamily of how much she loves her bandsaw. She still has it in her basement and uses it all the time (her husband was a butcher).

  15. As a fan of home butchering (hunting family), I'm looking forward to reading Julie Powell's new book. Maybe you can write a little review after whipping through each book, in all your spare time. :)

And happy birthday to you. (My son was born on Jan 9th and it always feels as if people are sort of sick of the parties by then - myself included).
