Warm

She climbs into our bed
somewhere in the middle
of the night
and throws an arm over me,
proprietary,
"you're mine, Mama".

I have a hard time denying her,
me,
this simple pleasure.

Someday she won't want
such sweet proximity,
she'll cut her apron strings,
she'll grow into her own,
she'll proudly sleep all night in her own bed.

But now,
the little, warm, sleeping body
with the heavy arm draped across my belly
is far closer to the babe in the womb
- my babe -
than I'd ever thought possible
almost six years ago.

She takes my breath away.

  1. I was thinking exactly what Harriet said. Red hasn't slept in my bed in over a week and it's weird. Last night, Dusty had a bad dream and slept with me. It is nice to be wanted.

  2. Yeah. One of my friends commented that almost everyone she knows of our generation sleeps with their kids at least some of the time. My parents never did it. I used to feel vaguely guilty. Then I got over it.

  3. Isn't this the best? I love it.

And when E asks me to cuddle with him in his bed until he falls asleep? That's great too.

No guilt. I wish this time could last for ever. But I know it won't.

    So best to enjoy it.

  5. My kids have never crawled into the bed with us -- unless it's already morning.

    I feel shortchanged.

  6. Very good. And so true! Mine (13 & 15) have sharpened their scissors, and are cutting wherever they can.

Let her snuggle as long as she wants. :-)

  8. More smiles from over here--about the adorableness of the snuggles, and about the fact that I'm not the only one enjoying snuggles from my kid.

  12. My favourite line "is far closer to the babe in the womb"... so true... so true...You've describe something which I can't put words to it...

I'm lucky to have such moments everyday and not taking it for granted....

  13. MQ often crawls into bed with us, too, vacillating between her preferred parent that night. we often talk about how we should put an end to this behavior, but neither of us really has the heart to do it. WE know it will end on its own soon enough.

  14. Oh, this is beautiful. I love it too, even though it means getting kicked in the stomach, having my ears pinched, and so on.

  17. My oldest daughter is 15, and this good stuff is all over. My youngest daughter is 11, and still sweet and loving. Always clinging to me for one last cuddle.

  19. Yes, those days are gone, but the sweet closeness remains. It's the right thing to do.

  20. Yes. Those crawl-in-bed-with-you cuddles feel even more precious, knowing that that the still-little-but-getting-longer bodies won't always be so willing to crawl in or cuddle. I'm so aware of this right now. Me, too, I'm trying to take full possession of being possessed while the gettin's still good.
