Pay It Forward, Heathen

Don't you love getting things in the mail? I don't mean bills, I don't mean the new clothes you ordered for the kid, I don't even mean the monthly shipment of coffee that keeps your household from spiraling into a cranky uncaffeinated disaster.

No, I'm talking about things you're sort of expecting, but you don't know what they're going to be - like birthday cards and giveaways from far-flung bloggers.

Kelly, of Heathen Family Revival, recently sent me a great package - a set of notecards using her own photo of asparagus, and a handmade fabric roll-up case for crayons - something for me, and something for the kid.

It's now incumbent on me to send something to one of you. I don't know what it'll be, I don't know if it'll be handmade, I don't know whether you'll like it, but I'll send it by ordinary US mail to help keep the post office in business.

Leave me a comment on this post by Thursday 8/13, and tell me one banal thing about your kitchen. I'll pick a winner at random on Friday 8/14. Sometime after that, sooner than later, I'll send you your gift, and then you'll Pay It Forward on your own blog and give someone else something cool.

  1. The best cookies on the interwebs come from my kitchen. :) They do indeed. :)

  2. I have two spoon racks full of spoons collected from travels in our kitchen.

  3. threadbare dishtowels, an overworked coffee maker and a sticky floor.

Oh, wait - that was more than one!

  4. It does not have a refrigerator in it.

Tony got so nervous because I was in charge of ordering the coffee this month. As if I, the one who is HOME with the coffee maker ALL DAY would allow us to run out.

    Let's see, banal.

    I have white appliances.

(I love Pay it Forward. I love Christmas Card exchanges. I love mail. For at least the first year or two of my SAHM life, the highlight of my day was mail delivery. Postal holidays were so dreary.)

(Whoo! I'm excited. And I've had a lot of coffee.)

  6. What a great idea! Only postage to and from Canada costs more; however, I am happy to play in spirit.
I have had two sizes of ants and some earwigs in my kitchen this summer.

  7. as i just revealed in a comment at niobe's (great limerick, btw) i have two microwaves in my kitchen (one came with the house, the other came with us when we moved. it actually comes in handy quite a bit, so we've never gotten rid of the second, although I'd never go out of my way to have 2)

  8. Looking out my kitchen window causes me to daydream. I think it's the trees.

  9. The button on the dishwasher pops out, preventing the rinse cycle, necessitating double cycling, washing by hand or eating off of filmy dishes. Annoyingly banal.

  10. Our refrigerator is too deep for the cabinet it's supposed to fit into and so sticks out into the room. It looks terrible.

  11. We had to put child-proof locks back on the pantry cabinet - not because of the kids, but because of the dog.

  12. Instead of buying a calendar I make one, every month. I draw on the backs of the papers my kids bring home from school. It makes the kids really mad, as if I'm desecrating some sacred document! I hang 'em on the refrigerator.

  13. Good lord, that comment did not make any sense. I draw a calendar on the back of the kids' schoolwork and it makes them mad. There. That's what I meant.

I was also going to say how much Kyla's comment made me laugh; I imagined her traveling around her kitchen, collecting spoons. But then I reread my own comment and thought I'd better shut up!

  14. We still have a toddler booster seat on one kitchen chair, just out of sheer inertia.

  15. Our kitchen is lovely. The most banal thing is probably the jar of dehydrated onions my mother-in-law bought for when she cooks, claiming that she can eat those even though she can't eat onions.

  16. I have four ovens: two regular ones, a microwave, and a convection oven. On most days, I don't use any of them.

  17. Mine lacks organization. And are fruit flies banal? They're making me batty.

  18. Oh, the poor post office! Isn't it terrible? For 44 cents they will hand-deliver a letter right to your door, usually in less than two days...and they always get such a bad raap. (Of course it also explains why they're going out of business, I guess...) Any-way... Those are some cool gifts! Love that asparagus picture!

  19. Been gone for a week so I'm slowly catching up on blogs.

One thing about my kitchen: it is ugly and I hate my old side-by-side refrigerator. Is that two things disguised as one? Oh well.

  20. I love the crayon roll-up case! That's a neat idea. The asparagus cards are very cool, too.

As for my kitchen, it is losing knobs from many of the cabinets and drawers. (It's very irritating to open a drawer with no hardware to pull on.)

Maggie, You well know that my entire Kitchen has been willed to you upon my death. So it is incumbent upon you to choice one item NOW that you can have before nature takes it course. How's about one of my ultra dull knifes?????

  23. My favorite thing in my kitchen is my blue 1950's aluminum coffee percolator! Glad I found you!
