Suitable

I am kind of thrilled to hear that Vikram Seth is planning a sequel to A Suitable Boy. If you've never read it, it's a 1200 page Indian soap opera. I read it years ago, reading in little chunks every night before bed (because you do not want to be carrying a 1200 page hardcover on the subway, though come to think of it, a 1200 page book might be a good excuse for a Kindle), and when I was done, I was bereft. I missed them all. So yeah! In four years, they'll be back in my life.

Four years?! I loved A Suitable Boy. I read it the summer after I (finally) graduated from college/grad school. I worked as a temp receptionist for a start-up trust company and was allowed to read when I wasn't answering the phone (always someone's wife) or typing a letter. The owners of the company always asked if I was reading the dictionary. Har har har, aging frat boys!

I loved this book. I remember how it used to leave welt on my stomach from where I rested it when reading!

I'd definitely pick up a sequel.

I read it and a year or two back I listened to a BBC dramatization of it that was very good. I'll be looking forward to a sequel.

OK, now I'm motivated.

I've picked up this book a hundred times to read it, then put it down because it was so big. Now I'll have to commit to doing it...

I like that, Magpie, back in my life. That's often how I feel with a good book and somehow I feel without skin when it's over. Don't know that one though. Some day, perhaps.
