Dogwood Haiku

A leaning dogwood
So lovely, so hopeful, yet
Not long for this world

There's a dogwood in our yard, a white dogwood just hanging on. It arches down the hill, unbalanced, because one of its uphill branches rotted and fell off, and another cut loose one day when we were rescuing the tree from some pernicious vines that a previous owner had allowed to run rampant.

Someday, the rest of the tree will go, but until then, I love its eccentric lean, its vaguely Japanese aspect, its crisp white flowers brightening a foggy day.

  5. We had a lovely white dogwood tree in our yard growing up. I have such memories of that tree, climbing it, playing with it's unique flower buds, putting the blossoms in my hair, etc. It's amazing how one post about a dying tree can evoke such nostalgia, isn't it?

  6. That's a lovely tribute to a tree. I loved a plum tree when I was a kid and hung out by it all the time until my parents cut it down. I wrote poems about it for years afterwords. As a gardening adult I now understand why they had to do it- it was rotting.

I love dogwoods in general. My favorites are the pink flowered ones and the ones like this one of yours.

We have one in our yard that has tiny clusters of flowers which I don't like so much. But Philip likes it so we'll keep it.

At our last house, there was a struggling dogwood down amongst the oaks and pines, like yours. Even though we lived there eleven years, each year I would forget it was there until springtime. I could see it from my bedroom window and at least once a year I would catch my breath in surprise and pleasure at its show.

Since first reading this when you posted it, I have been noticing the dogwoods around town, and most of them seem to be lopsided. Maybe yours will last longer than you think.
