My mother's brother got married, for the first time, when I was just six. I was the flower girl - in a pink dress that my mother made, and a pair of the red Moroccan leather shoes that she bought in series (every size, for party shoes, and they got handed down). The expression on my face slays me - clearly, the wedding will fall to pieces if I fail at walking down the aisle.
Later, that marriage did fail - probably because he is a despicable beast. But, as my mother kept everything, I still have the pink dress, and after the photo resurfaced the other night, I figured I'd better get a picture of the girlie in the dress, before she outgrows it and it's too late.
Please excuse the scab on her forehead; she fell down go boom the other night, smack dab on her forehead and one hip and both knees. She's fine but her father may be scarred for life - he tripped her accidentally and caused the fall.
The dress fits perfectly. Too bad no one we know is getting married.
great pictures! i wonder what happened to my flower girl dress? I wore it every sunday until it no longer fit!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And, yes, your expression is priceless. Maybe you knew the wedding would end!
ReplyDeleteYou had to have known about the marriage's demise!
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your girlie. That window light is gorgeous. It's fun to see you as a little one, too.
ReplyDeleteWe actually have 3 weddings to go to in the next 7 months. Phoebe will be flower girl in one of them. She is likely to take the job very seriously as well.
And the red shoes?
ReplyDeleteWonderful shot;)
It slays me how much your daughter looks like you!
ReplyDeleteI'd be having pretend weddings every day. It's that lovely.
ReplyDeletei never had a dress so pretty in my life -- except my wedding dress, which i made and is not suitable for any other occasion.
ReplyDeleteyour mom was not only lovely for making and saving the dress, but BRILLIANT for multiple sizes of red party shoes to be passed around! and not just any red shoes, either.
I looooove the red shoes. Well. I love everything about both photos. Except maybe the scab, poor thing.
ReplyDeleteshe is so breathtaking
ReplyDeleteOh, she looks lovely in that dress. And the dress is still beautiful. I have always been a sucker for red shoes. I don;t think I ever had any when I was a child but have had my fair share of them as an adult.
ReplyDeletethis was beyond precious.
ReplyDeleteWow. I went to look for some of my old dresses but my parents got rid of them recently!
ReplyDeleteBooh. It's just so cool that you have the photo of you in the dress and then of her in the dress.
Aw, you're killing me with the cute. I have only boys, so no one to dress in my handmade flower girl dress, all the homemade prom dresses, the handmade wedding dress.... Snif!
ReplyDeleteIf you can get a picture of her STANDING in the dress with her hair pulled back and put them side by side--people may not know who is who!
ReplyDeleteI have a Jessica McClintock pink dress (size 5)that SC wore to my brother's wedding at the age of 2.
She was NOT a flower girl, and (as I predicted) made a fuss as I came down the aisle, having been roped into being a bridesmaid (!).
Happily, my brother is a nice guy for a robber baron hedge fund running type, and is still happily married :D
Precious!
ReplyDeleteKayTar fell the other day and I was walking with her and was mid step...I stepped down right onto her finger and basically ground it into the pavement before I realized what was happening. Her nail is probably going to fall off now. I feel horrid. Tell your husband I can commiserate.
You had red leather shoes???? I would so have tried to trade you something for them if I'd known you then.
ReplyDeleteFA
What a beautiful picture, and how great that you still have the dress!
ReplyDeleteAm thinking about the comment you left over at Canape's blog today. I didn't know you did that kind of work. I'm so glad you do, and glad to know you too....
i must tell this to husband, he's always cursing my impulse to save things...now aren't you glad you have that dress? you must stage a photo of her walking down the aisle with a wreath of flowers in her hair. :-)
ReplyDeleteVery sweet. I do that with old clothes too.
ReplyDeleteYou do look very focused on your task! Good job.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the play of shadows in the second picture. Stunning.
you looked sooooo sweet in that!
ReplyDeleteand now, your girl in it... that's a feeling that's indescribable!
you and your daughter, both intent in different ways.
ReplyDeletemy flower girl dress was just a little bit awful to me even when i was six...polyester yellow and brown blowsy floral, 1978. i think the fact that it got lost along the way may have been a small mercy.
Take that girl out for tea in that dress! you MUST. BEsides, it would be fun. And elegant. And she'll remember it always.
ReplyDeleteSomeone you know NEEDS to get married. How adorable is she? Come on! One wedding, that's all you need.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of your daughter -- so artistic! And I love that the dress fits. My mother had a gorgeous prom dress that she kept till we were high school age, but sadly I turned out to be 6" taller than she, so I couldn't wear it. My little sister did, though, and looked wonderful in her 1959 hoop skirt!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that she could wear it too!
ReplyDeleteMy mum got me some paisley bell bottomed overalls when I was 2. Moo wore them when she was 2. She looked as ridiculous as I did ;)
that photo of your girl is gorgeous. Perfect, perfect lighting. i love it.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had some of my clothes from when I was little to pass down to my kid.
ReplyDeleteWait, I had a boy. Never mind. ;-)
