Bugs

Last week, my husband sent me the little bug - he'd seen it somewhere, tried to swat at the screen, and realized that I'd love it. He was right. So I stuck it in the header to see if anyone would notice.

I've always liked bugs.

For a long time, I had checks with bugs on them, back in the days before online banking became widespread. I'd whip out a check at the doctor's office and get the desk clerk to shriek. And they amused me every time I had to pay Con-Ed.

That said, I'm not interested in eating bugs and the article in the Times Magazine on Sunday was more than a little repellent. Some guy is trying to convince people "that consuming insects is both pleasing to the palate and good for the planet", calling insects the "terrestrial cousins" of shrimp and lobster.

Well, for me? I don't like shrimp OR lobster, so I think I'll skip the Thai giant water bug, "a creature the size of your thumb" which "yields a thimbleful of meat the consistency of crab and has a surprisingly powerful citrus aroma". Yikes.

  1. Are those ROACHES on that check?

    Shudder.

But those checks--not so sure about THOSE.

  3. I *did* notice the little bug on your last post, but I assumed I had just never noticed it before. Because I'm spacy, like that.

The butterfly conservatory around here has a Bug Feast every year, during March Break. You can go there and feast on chocolate covered grasshoppers and roach stew. I haven't mustered up the nerve to take my kids to it yet, mostly because they would want me to try the bugs with them. Yuck.

This just confirms my vegetarianism, thank you very much. I don't mind sharing the world with bugs (except roaches, centipedes and earwigs, oh and mosquitos) but they will never be consumed. Blech!

  5. I only noticed after people started pointing it out in the comments.

  6. All I can say is "eeww!" about the Thai water bug! YUCK!

I love the roach-y checks! But sadly I missed the bug in the header, as I haven't commented much lately and read you in a reader.

  7. This post just made my day. I am thoroughly impressed with the little bug, which was even more spectacular in Google Reader because you couldn't see the box around it!

  9. I'm now convinced, sadly, that I'm just stupid. The bug was in a BLUE BOX when your post came up in Bloglines. And, you know what? I STILL hit my screen.

  10. I don't mind bugs (although I don't much want to eat them!)...but I can't abide spiders. At all.

  12. Ok, dude. It doesn't take much these days to make me nauseous, and that description of the edible bugness certainly just about did it. The header bug is cute, and I noticed it, and also thought it had been there before and I had been inattentive.
The checks are teh amusing. Especially the reaction they got you.
Does Miss M share your passion?

  13. Looks like I missed out on all the fun. Google reader, never showed the bug, but this time it did. Sigh.

Your post does remind me of a story that I don't want to admit to.

I noticed, I noticed! We love bugs here, too. I've tried very hard to have my kids not be bug-phobic - and I think it's worked, thus far. But eating them...? I think perhaps maybe not.

  17. I noticed. And it wigged me out a bit but I wagered on.

And then I check out mothergoosemouse and she's got these 3 mice on her header now.

    I can't take it.

I live in New York. These creatures show up in my apartment from time to time. Gives me the weebie jeebies.

  18. I noticed the bug. I've eaten bugs. And grubs. The bugs were OK. They were very small bugs. You just had to not think about them as bugs.

Here's a link...I don't know which of these bugs I ate. But it was in Mexico. So nutritious! As with many foods, the key is condiments.

I'm one of those evil people who has no trouble killing bugs. I don't "redirect" ants when they're marching in my house... I kill them. Boric Acid is my friend. But, your bug, crawling across the screen, limited in space, is kind of cute.

  22. Oh, I noticed the bug - with a shudder. And since when is a "surprisingly strong aroma" of any kind a good thing when it comes to food?

  23. OMG, Magpie, I almost swatted my computer screen when this post came up on my reader--the bug scrolled up before anything else.

  24. my dad used to eat ants to amuse kids at camp

  25. That's why my husband won't eat soft-shell crab (which I love)--too insect like. But then, when he was in Africa he tried eating ants, and has told our girls they taste pretty good.

I love butterflies. And helpful bugs in my garden. But I'm a NYC girl--roaches--FEH!
