Miss M. came home from school one day recently with a nice picture of a mermaid that she'd drawn. Once home, she asked for scissors: "I want to cut out my mermaid". So I gave her a pair of scissors (the ones that have now been archived due to the finger-snipping incident last weekend - they are frightening sharp for kid's scissors). Apparently she was stumped as to how to cut around the arms, because the mermaid ended up without any. Oops.
My mother is in the hospital. It seems that she had a mini-stroke yesterday - a TIA, the kind that resolves without permanent symptoms. She was sitting at the kitchen table while I was making lunch, when she started speaking gibberish. She recognized that she was having trouble speaking, so she tried to write - same result. So I took her to the emergency room, where they ran some tests and admitted her. The gibberish abated, even before we got to the the ER, which is good. But now she's being pushed hither and yon for an echo of this, a cat scan of that, an MRI of the other. I'm glad I was there at her house when it happened. If she'd been home alone, not talking to anyone, not trying to write anything, she might never have known anything was screwy.
If bad things happen in threes, am I due for a third trip to the emergency room this week? I hope not.
Oh no -- sorry to hear about your mom -- I hope she's continuing to recover.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your mama. I hope she's on the mend soon.

Sorry to hear about your mom - hope she's okay.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am so sorry about your mom. But I am with you-- it's lucky you were there and both of you were able to recognize what was happening. I hope this was an isolated incident and that she gets to go home soon.
ReplyDeleteRe:mermaid. Next comes gluing the thing onto other things. Collage if you are lucky. Bad furniture accidents if you are not. It's 3pm. Do you know where your glue stick is?
It's so good that you were there when your mom was having troubles! I hope she's okay soon.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the mermaid. Poor little thing...
Aw, your mama! So lucky you were there. She'll be in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteA mermaid without arms? Is she then more stream-lined to swim, and can swim faster?
Sorry to hear about your mom. How scary! Glad she will be ok though.
ReplyDeletePoor mermaid too...!
That's really scary - I'm glad she's going to be OK.
ReplyDeleteSO sorry to hear about your mom. Sending positive thoughts.
ReplyDeleteit is so lucky you were there! and glad it was a mini-stroke. glad she is getting the full workup, to avoid future problems.

p.s. -- great mermaid!
Oh, knock wood - I certainly hope no more is coming! (Or maybe mermaid amputation counts as one.) I'm so sorry about your mom. How scary - and how lucky you were there!
ReplyDeleteI hope everything's okay with your mom! Really fortunate you were there.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear that happened to your mom---but glad it wasn't one with permanent trouble.
ReplyDeleteI hope it is okay.
And hope there is no third thing.
Sorry about your Mom. I hope she has as best of a recovery as she can. Maybe it's time to research which ER near you has the reversible stroke shot, in case she is at risk for another stroke that won't be so reversible. They don't all have it.
ReplyDeleteMiss M's mermaid is fabulous. Perhaps invest in an glue stick for future mishaps. I love glue sticks. Nice and neat.
Well, I'm terribly sorry to hear about your mom. Hope all is immensely better soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a wee bit sorry for the mermaid. My kids tend to decapitate things when they cut them out -- I guess it's better to lose your limbs than lose your head!
So glad you were there with your mom! I worry about this very thing, as my folks are so far. While tedious, so good that they will work her up with the gazillion tests. Thrice gives good advice about noting the hospitals with a stroke protocol (TPA I believe). Plus they will probably advise you and her to talk about the signs of stroke with all your family and her friends, to help identify problems early. Hopefully though this is it for a long, long time.
ReplyDeleteBetter the mermaid lose her arms than her tail I think! Hoping no more trips to the ER for an eon.
Oh Magpie. I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. You'll all be in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThat mermaid is fantastic BTW.
I'm sorry about your mom! How frightening for her!
ReplyDeleteOh, goodness. How frightening. Thank God you were there.
ReplyDeletexxoo
oof! Poor mama!
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad you were there!
ReplyDeleteI'm forgetting your mom's cool nickname ... but regardless, hope all's well or soon will be.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry about M. I hope she's hanging in there. And I am quite happy to hear more details- that she was not alone, that you could take her, etc.
ReplyDeleteMy love to you and the family....
i'm so sorry about your mom, love.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that your mom is doing better and that you were there when the stroke happened. I feel for that poor armless mermaid too. How is she going to put her shell bra on if it comes off?
ReplyDeleteHope your mom keeps feeling better and survives all the tests. I'm thinking about you and her.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'm so glad you were with her. Please keep us posted on her progress!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that it was only a TIA and that you were there. Hopefully they can now prevent anything more serious from happening.
ReplyDeleteoy. so glad she is OK, and hope that nothing further happens
ReplyDeleteI'm sending good thoughts to your mother.
ReplyDeleteAnd tell your daughter not to worry about her lovely armless mermaid. They do all their swimming with their tail. Problem solved.
I'm glad your mom is ok -- and I hope you're not in for any more emergency room trips!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the mermaid -- we have many similar drawings at our house (except I'm not brave for scissors yet).
Best wishes to your mom!
ReplyDeleteso glad it was minor.
ReplyDeletefyi, just got some awesome safety scissors from ikea. it would take great effort to snip a body part with these
Hi, I just found your website and I think it's uber cute. I will be back for some more.
ReplyDeleteFeel free to check out my blog too.
That is a bit scary! My mother had a 'few' just before Christmas. Thankfully, my sister was with her to take her around...plus she lives in Assisted Living; not that she would ever consider 'bothering' a doctor...
ReplyDeleteI hope she's okay and home soon!
Oh that is so scary. I'm so glad you were there and that she is doing better. Sending healing energy her way.
ReplyDeleteHow terrifying. For you and for her.
ReplyDeleteHow scary for you and your mother. I'm so glad you were with her.
ReplyDeleteoh i'm so sorry to hear about your mom! i hope everything turns out okay. best wishes!
ReplyDeleteps love the armless mermaid. love it.
Oh, I'm so terribly sorry about your mother. I hope she heals quickly. My best wishes and loving thoughts go to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteOh so sorry, Magpie. That's scary stuff to worry about. I'll be thinking about you.
ReplyDeleteI'm rather new to your blog, but I thought I would post this link anyway for you or anyone else looking for a hospital which is more likely than not equipped to appropriately treat TIA's and CVA's:
