CSA Week 19

I've been reading Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - her account of a year of producing most of their own food, and obtaining the rest locally. It's fascinating and inspiring, even if I'm not likely to start raising chickens in my own back yard, or growing much in the way of vegetables. I know where to get live chickens nearby, I have the CSA for a goodly amount of our annual vegetables, and I'm lucky enough to work near a terrific greenmarket wherein I can plug the gaps.

Kingsolver's book has an associated website, which includes all of the recipes that are in the book. I haven't tried any of them yet, but some of them look great.
  • Spinach
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli Rabe
  • Asian Greens braising mix
  • Salad Mix
  • Ping Pong Tomatoes (pint)
  • Plum Tomatoes (quart)
  • Delicata Squash (3)
  • Onions (2)
  • Parsley
  • Sage

Because we're getting a little behind the CSA vegetables, I've been blanching, chopping and freezing the greens. And last night, I made another batch of oven-roasted tomatoes. I left them in a slow oven while I went out to a meeting; when I came back, the house smelled delicious.

And maybe, just maybe, the kid has taken to a new vegetable. While we were at the pick-up yesterday, she was surreptitiously stealing bits of cauliflower. Go figure.

  2. Oh how I loved that book! I have no trouble buying local from May through October thanks to an awesome Farmer's Market where I live. Then Bleak Canadian Winter hits and I find myself eyeing those cheap bananas at the grocery store.

  3. I loved cauliflower when I was little, too -- still do. I hope my daughter loves it (or some kind of vegetable besides peas) someday.

  4. Have you had any fun with the squash yet? I know you're not a big fan. We keep getting interesting, but so far unidentifiable winter squash (except for the scary turban). I'll have to load a picture of this latest one on my blog to see if anyone can help.

I love Barbara Kingsolver. I haven't read that one. I'll have to look for it. I'd love to have some chickens of my own someday.

  5. Glad to hear the book is good. I'm still working through Omnivore's Dilemma, but that one is next in my list.

Cauliflower is my third favorite vegetable, after brussels sprouts and broccoli. Proof that I _am_ crazy-- brussels sprouts are my very favorite veggie.

  6. I'm a big fan of vegetables. I had my kids on the bandwagon for a bit but they fell off.

  10. I came looking for this post again because it's the reason I sought out and read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. I liked it very much and am feeling inspired to do more local eating, but January is a hard time for such a calling.
