Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and...

Basil!

Mysteriously, the sage died over the winter...I didn't think you could kill sage, so I had to get a new one. I thought the parsley would be okay too; it's a biennial, and it had been in year 1 last year, but, no - this was a harsh winter. Rosemary and basil always have to be replaced.

And I need thyme, but they were out of anything but lemon thyme at the Greenmarket yesterday, so thyme will have to wait.

  1. I've managed to kill sage as well. Though, if I wait long enough, my parsley always seems to reemerge in one mutant(and inedible) form or another.

We've been working on the garden, too. The only thing that came through the winter was rosemary, so the sage, basil, cilantro, thyme, parsley and mint were all new. I love this time of year outside! Even though I have to pick up all the fallen branches.

How does one make thyme wait? Incredible.

  5. Oh, I find that sage only last a few years for me. I don't think it likes East Coast winters that much.

Last year I put in columnar basil that I picked up as a member perk at the Morris Arboretum's plant sale--it was a little sad from a culinary standpoint, but a boon for gardening b/c it doesn't flower.

  6. All I can keep alive in the herb garden from one year to the next is mint (which is practically unkillable) and chives. Everything else I have just given up on and buy fresh each year.
