Since they are predicting snow for tonight, it seemed appropriate to post this little thing - an essay I wrote in 1969 when I was in the third grade. My mother had to have her gall bladder out, and we children were sent off to stay at my grandparent's house for a couple of days. We got stuck there when a huge snowstorm hit, and my mother ended up staying in the hospital an extra day because my father couldn't drive over there to pick her up.
On a whim, I googled to see if I could find any references to that big snowstorm. Lo and behold, it turns out to have been the snowstorm that did John Lindsay in:
February 9, 1969 -
The so-called "Lindsay storm" pounded the northeast. Bedford, Massachusetts recorded 25 inches of snow, New York City had 20 inches, and Portland, Maine ended up with 22 inches. The storm got its name from New York Mayor John Lindsay who ran into political misfortune after sections of New York city remained unplowed for a week after the storm.
Oh my God, you have so much neat stuff from your childhood! Like that Valentine, too. I wish I could find stuff like that but everything is so disorganized.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to share the good news. Later today I'll be putting up my post about the winners on my blog and I just wanted to give you the heads up that you are one. Email me at LieselElliott at gmail dot com and I'll fill you in on the details.
Two of my favorite parts:
ReplyDelete"My grandma was up almost all night because my sister was screaming"
and "Now my grandpa can't get over the visit"! Hilarious! More! More!
I was born during this storm! My dad had could only find a canoe paddle to dig a path so he could drive my mom to the hospital. Luckily, he made it so I wasn't born in the car! My parents NOW have fond memories, but it was a scary drive in Rye, NY to the hospital.
